Following in the footsteps of its sister scheme, the Double Glazing and Conservatory Ombudsman Scheme (DGCOS), the Home Insulation & Energy Systems Contractors Scheme (HIES) aims to promote the best levels of consumer protection in the renewable industry.

HIES was launched to provide comprehensive protection to the renewable market, and its insurance provision is designed to offer peace of mind when buying any of the 45 Green Deal and Eco Measures.

Delivering protection for consumers and installers, HIES is specifically designed to protect homeowners installing energy efficient products. Homeowners who employ an accredited HIES member will receive deposit and stage payment protection, an insurance backed guarantee and a free dispute resolution facility including independent inspections, professional mediation and legally binding arbitration. To top this homeowners are additionally protected by a Compensation Fund to honour any unpaid awards made by the Ombudsman.

Tony Pickup, founder of both HIES and DGCOS, said: “Installers in the renewable market were telling us that they wanted to be part of a scheme that provided complete confidence for their customers and set them apart from the competition, and HIES does just that.”

Launched in early 2012, HIES is reportedly going from strength to strength and already includes some well respected companies such as Apple Solar, First for Solar, T&K Home Improvements and Solar King.  HIES has also received the support of TV’s consumer champion Nick Ross, who is the ambassador for DGCOS, and he is featured on all the marketing materials available to members.

Nick Ross said: “Membership is as good for the installers as it is for customers. Installers who gain accreditation boost their own edge in the marketplace and get the same protection as their clients. And, by guaranteeing first class safeguards all round, HIES helps build a fine reputation for the industry.”
