SMA sheds staff in sales downturn

German inverter manufacturer SMA look set to cut as many as 1,000 posts following disappointing sales figures.

The company sold 1.2GW worth of inverters in the first three months of 2013, compared to almost 2GW during the same period last year. It also predicts a further contraction in demand for inverters for the rest of year amid decreasing subsidies and the likelihood of EU import tariffs being levied on Chinese solar panels.

SMA stated in October 2012 that it would phase out 1,000 jobs over the coming year and it is not yet clear whether the new losses are simply confirmation of its previous announcement or an addition.
