DECC publishes UK energy statistics

The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has published a summary of the UK’s energy statistics for the year 2011.

It indicates that electricity from renewable sources increased by 33 percent on a year earlier and accounted for 9.4 percent of total UK electricity generation (34.4 TWh).

Much of the increase installed capacity resulted from PV capacity expanding by 12 times due to high uptake of the Feed-in Tariff (a rise of 515.9 MW).

Although total energy consumption was down 6.9 percent on 2010 levels, imports of energy exceeded UK production for the first time since 1974 as indigenous production of gas and oil contracted by 20.8 percent and 17.5 percent respectively.
