Hutchinson develops new design for wind turbine tower

Hutchinson Engineering has unveiled its newly designed wind turbine tower – a 20m structure manufactured for US-based Bergey Windpower.

Two towers have been installed on agricultural land in Herefordshire and Shropshire, each accommodating 10kW turbines and both constructed to benefit from higher wind speeds at an elevated 20m height.

Dean Drinkwater, managing director of Hutchinson Engineering, based in Widnes, UK explained: “We have designed bespoke 12m and 15m wind turbine towers for Bergey, but this is the first time we have custom-built a 20m structure.

“The monopole has a smaller footprint than lattice towers, it is easy to install with the hydraulic ram, and the design is aesthetically pleasing to minimise the impact on the environment and visually enhance the surrounding landscape.

“We were chosen to build the towers by SIAC, the sole distributor of Bergey turbines in the UK and Ireland, because of our solid reputation in the industry.

“Bergey Windpower is the oldest and most experienced manufacturer of residential-sized wind turbines in the world, and we are growing our partnership with this firm.”

Patrick Dormon, managing director of SIAC, described his reasons for selecting Hutchinson Engineering to design their towers: “Because the Bergey turbine is known worldwide for its robust, reliable and trusted engineering, when we were looking for an engineering company in the UK, we wanted to find someone with exactly the same reputation.

“Hutchinson Engineering is the most reputable supplier of towers for wind turbines in the UK. It stands to reason that we would choose a company with the same attributes.

“Bergey turbines are known worldwide for their long-term reliability. In fact, the Bergey has an estimated 50 year design life based on a real 30-year track record and comes with an industry leading 10 year warranty.”

He added: “We are pleased to have found a monopole manufacturer that can match this – with the best durability, design and performance.”
